BEHIND THE SHOOT - Styling our "American Gothic" Wedding Inspiration for Green Wedding Shoes
It’s December and freezing in LA! (not really), but this is the perfect time to revisit our moody shoot with Tyler Branch featured on Green Wedding Shoes. We love how the warm tones, long sleeves, and rich details easily transition from fall to winter wedding inspiration.
BREAKING DOWN THE LOOK WITH JENNI, HEAD STYLIST AND OWNER OF THE BLUSHING BIRD:
For me...it always starts here. What's a styled shoot without a giant crown? I’m a big lover of bold wedding headpieces (clearly) so when I start the styling process I’m inspired by the beautiful work of my favorite Blushing Bird lady designers and go from there. In this case, the Melinda Rose astilbe crown stole my heart many moons ago, before we even opened the shop. Melinda was the very first designer I chose to carry at The Blushing Bird and the astilbe is the star of her bridal accessories collection and a bestseller in the birdhouse.
Hundreds of tiny Swarovski crystals are meticulously hand-wired and shaped to resemble the beautiful astilbe flower. This stunning crown pairs gorgeously with a more detailed gown like the one we chose for this shoot, or can be the centerpiece with a simple dress style. The gold wiring gives the crown a warm tone, or can be made with silver wiring for cool wintry vibes.
I knew I wanted a vintage inspired gown with a high-collar. Something that evoked a Victorian feel; a little prim and proper, super elegant, and ultra feminine. Tatyana Merenyuk’s gown was hands down my first choice because the lace neckline, 3/4 sleeves, and dozens of tiny buttons up the back, recalling the intricate design details of the Victorian age with a modern twist. I also love the form fitting silhouette, and how the ruffled skirt added some visual interest and texture without overpowering the details we added to the complete look.
Gold baby, gold! Who said wedding shoes have to be white? Harriet Wilde is new to the birdhouse and shaking things up in here. We used her laser cut Peony style which has a sky-high platform, silk ribbon ties, and glam champagne gold tone. They’re also RIDICULOUSLY comfortable. I’m not kidding. 4-inches of fun with a dance-all-night feel. We never mess with uncomfortable shoes around here, there’s just too much dancing on tables to achieve.
Mignonne Handmade makes our English net veils and my god are they romantic. So many brides tell me they're "not a veil girl" but when they try the English net....everything changes. The soft, drapey feel is such a great low-key and modern take on a veil. We chose the ever-flattering fingertip length in ivory to add a touch of texture (and drama...always drama) without competing with the intricate lace detail in the dress. Veils also make for the best photo opportunities so even if you're not quite sure, get one for the option!
Again, I started with the details. Our Brackish bow ties, handmade from ethically sourced bird feathers, are such a great way to build a look for the kind of groom who has his own distinct style. Which honestly, is most grooms these days. We chose the bright pop of red for some dimension, and paired it with a three piece tonal-check wool suit from ASOS.
I can’t and won’t take any credit on this genius. One of my favorite people to collaborate with is Marisa of Revel Petals. Her unique perspective, impeccable taste, and commitment to organic and sustainable flower practices are so special. She had an elegant palette and used moody burgundy, dusty lavender, and muted shades of green to create a stunning bouquet. Best of all were her unbelievably unique foliage masks which she hand made with leaves and sticks, prickly flowers, the spiny arms of succulents and dried money tree wisps.
THE TABLE TOP
We were so lucky to get Borrowed Blu involved, their selection of tabletop rentals is so diverse and elegant and they were kind enough to let us mix and match to develop a look we haven’t seen before. Everything from the marble placemats, to the black and gold flatware, and glass goblets rimmed with gold worked seamlessly together to exude a moody, and romantic setting. When I was busy dressing the models, Lauren of Laurel & Fey styled up the table in such a cool way. Seriously... this is why you need a wedding planner! You've got other things to enjoy on the day and uber-organized/stylish babes like Lauren are so essential.
THE HAIR AND MAKE UP
Hot tip here! Amber Rose is the real deal. I briefly explained our vision to her and we discussed lipstick shades, but she pretty much just instinctively got the vibe. She made our beautiful model Merissa Underwood even more stunning by highlighting her pale ivory skin which contrasted strikingly with her mahogany hair set in an effortless textured side bride.
We're so grateful to our beautiful venue, Oak Canyon Ranch, and the rest of the talented creative team for helping us bring this unique look together.
